The Link Between Stress & Crime: National Stress Awareness Month 2024

As April unfolds, we enter National Stress Awareness Month. Since 1992, Stress Awareness Month has been observed every April, aiming to increase awareness surrounding the origins and solutions to our contemporary stress epidemic.

Understanding the Link Between Stress and Crime:

Research has consistently shown a strong association between stress and criminal behaviour. When individuals experience high levels of stress, whether due to personal challenges, economic hardship, or societal pressures, they may become more susceptible to engaging in criminal activities. Stress can impair judgment, increase impulsivity, and heighten aggression, all of which contribute to the likelihood of criminal conduct.

As well as this, environmental stressors such as poverty, inequality, and lack of access to resources further increase the risk of criminal behaviour.

Stress as a Risk Factor for Victimisation:

In addition to influencing criminal behaviour, stress also plays a significant role in shaping individuals' susceptibility to becoming victims of crime. This relates to how we protect our residential and commercial customers as individuals may lack their usual awareness of their properties safety by leaving doors unlocks, not engaging alarms or not noticing suspicious behaviours.

Certain populations and groups, including students, caregivers, and frontline workers, often bear the brunt of stress due to the demands of their roles and responsibilities. For these individuals, managing stress becomes paramount not only for their well-being but also for safeguarding against potential threats to their safety and security.

Stress Management Strategies:

Fortunately, effective stress management techniques can serve as powerful tools in the realm of crime prevention. By prioritising self-care practices and adopting resilience-building strategies, individuals can mitigate the negative effects of stress and bolster their ability to make informed decisions and resist engaging in criminal behaviour.

Simple yet impactful measures such as

  • Practicing mindfulness
  • Regular exercise
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Connecting with friends and family
